Paris: Axel Arigato Store Opening

Following a lengthy five-year search, Axel Arigato secured a prime spot in the French capital for its flagship store. Smack in the middle of the Marais, arguably the most fashionable shopping district in Paris, the diversifying Swedish footwear brand secured a retail space alongside rue Vieille du Temple. Similar to its other retail spaces, this one also makes a bold design statement with the helping hand of Stockholm-based architect and longtime collaborator Christian Halleröd. Situated on the ground floor of an early 20th-century building with an ornate red brick and limestone façade, the interior design offers a stark contemporary contrast. Playfully fusing Brutalismwith Minimalism, the two-room space flaunts a  monochromatic backdrop of grey walls and flooring punctuated with a precise configuration of chunky travertine-clad volumes. A large beam, dividing the two shop sections, is also covered in the same material. As said, the furnishings are placed rhythmically in the centre of the space, and they’re made of massive light-yellow travertine stone, with different surfaces such as honed, bush-hammered, and raw sides, and they’re intentionally designed in an abstract and sculptural way to evoke a gallery-like atmosphere. A sizeable freestanding LED screen is used for displaying creative content adding to the forever-changing vision of Axel Arigato co-founder Max Svärdh. The store in Paris is part of an ambitious retail expansion scheme, and additional design-led retail spaces are scheduled to open in Berlin, Munich and Milan later this year.
