TOMRA presented its latest generation of reverse vending solutions for drink container recycling. The company introduced several new and updated reverse vending machines (RVMs) and system concepts developed for deposit return and recycling programs.
“TOMRA takes a user-centric approach in the design of its reverse vending solutions, which includes considering the recycling experience not only of end consumers but also that of the retailers that host our RVMs,” explains Marius Fraurud, EVP and Head of TOMRA Collection.
“Reverse vending has a proven impact for stores, their customers and our shared journey towards a world without waste. We have been excited to work with our retail customers to develop our latest generation of products on show at EuroShop, to truly anticipate and respond to evolving customer needs, and support customers in adapting to a changing market.”
Concept systems: multi-feed and glass handling
Among the concepts presented was a revamped TOMRA R1, a high-volume multi-feed reverse vending machine that allows consumers to return entire bags of containers rather than inserting them one by one.
According to retailer feedback, installations of TOMRA’s multi-feed systems have resulted in an average 33% increase in user sessions and an 86% increase in container volumes.
The updated design replaces the round hatch with a new in-feed solution aligned with the visual design of the TOMRA R2 and TOMRA T100 models. The wider opening and revised interface aim to simplify the return process for consumers while supporting operational efficiency for retailers.
TOMRA also presented the SoftSlide concept, designed to extend existing reverse vending installations to accept glass bottle returns. The concept responds to growing demand for systems capable of handling reusable drink containers and aligns with developments such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The system allows existing installations to be retrofitted as recycling requirements evolve.
Both concepts were presented to gather feedback from customers and industry partners.
Newly introduced reverse vending systems
Several new reverse vending machines and system components were introduced, including:
- TOMRA T100
- TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus
- Updated TOMRA R2
- TOMRA MultiPac storage solution
- Side-By-Side crate unit
- TOMRA BinoQ and BinoQ Assist digital tools
TOMRA T100
The TOMRA T100 is a new single-feed reverse vending machine designed for container return systems. The model builds on the earlier TOMRA T9 platform and includes design changes aimed at improving usability and durability.
The machine incorporates corrosion-resistant materials and energy-saving features such as dimming and sleep mode when the system is not in use. Guidance lighting above the in-feed and on-screen instructions support the return process for users.
The modular system allows retailers to configure the machine for different combinations of containers and crates and to upgrade the system as recycling regulations evolve.
TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus
The TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus, introduced following the earlier TOMRA S1 Rugged, is designed for outdoor use. This allows retailers to install reverse vending machines outside the store, preserving indoor retail space.
The system offers expanded storage capacity and modular add-ons. Retailers can include a SoftDrop module for reusable glass bottles or an additional storage module. For single-use glass containers, an optional integrated crusher configuration is available.
The unit is constructed to operate in outdoor environments and includes a high-visibility screen designed for readability in daylight.
TOMRA R2 update
An updated TOMRA R2 was also introduced. The system becomes TOMRA’s first multi-feed reverse vending machine capable of accepting glass bottles.
The system includes a cleaning assist module that automatically sprays water on key internal areas of the machine. The feature is designed to maintain machine performance and reduce manual cleaning tasks for store staff.
Storage and crate handling
The TOMRA MultiPac backroom storage solution has also been updated. Steel cabinet doors have been replaced with polymer doors, reducing weight and making them easier for store staff to handle. Transparent tunnels have been added to assist with error detection.
For markets where drink containers are returned in crates, TOMRA introduced the Side-By-Side crate unit, which allows crate returns to be integrated with selected reverse vending machines and adapted to different storage room layouts.
Digital tools: BinoQ and BinoQ Assist
TOMRA also presented the BinoQ and BinoQ Assist digital systems.
BinoQ provides retail managers with data tools designed to support monitoring and planning across reverse vending installations.
BinoQ Assist provides operational staff with real-time notifications and alerts related to machine activity. The system expands on the existing Notify+Assist platform with updated notification functions and a simplified user interface.
According to TOMRA, BinoQ is currently used by more than 200 organizations worldwide.
“At TOMRA, we believe that the best innovations begin with listening. Every product we showcase at EuroShop is the result of close collaboration with our retail partners,” adds Marius Fraurud.
“At EuroShop, we’ll show the real, measurable impact of reverse vending. Our latest solutions are designed not just to meet retailers’ operational needs, but to deliver a seamless, engaging recycling experience for their customers. We’re proud to be a partner that retailers can trust to help them succeed in a rapidly changing market.”
