The One Off – A Record Store–Inspired Retail Installation

Retail design agency The One Off presented a stand inspired by the experience of browsing a record store. The concept explored how physical retail environments can create moments of discovery, connection, and engagement at a time when digital commerce and emerging technologies are simplifying many of the functional aspects of shopping. By placing discovery, culture, and community at the centre of the experience, the stand examined how designed environments can invite exploration while technology operates quietly in the background to support the journey.

To illustrate this thinking, The One Off adopted the record store as the central framework for the stand. Long associated with browsing, conversation, and the excitement of discovering something unexpected, record stores offer a familiar cultural reference point for environments that encourage curiosity and interaction. Translating this experience into a contemporary retail concept allowed the agency to show how curated spaces can shape engaging customer journeys while strengthening connections between brands and customers.

At the centre of the stand was the Record Wall, a visual merchandising installation designed to transform The One Off’s portfolio into a browsable experience. Inspired by the familiar act of searching through record collections, the wall encouraged visitors to slow down and explore projects at their own pace.

Each “record” represented a project delivered with global brands and retailers across categories including sport, fashion, technology, outdoor, beauty, and automotive. Displayed as album-style case studies, the installation created a clear visual overview of the agency’s work while inviting visitors to interact with the content through a tactile browsing experience.

Complementing the Record Wall was a series of record players designed to turn browsing into interaction. Visitors could select vinyl records embedded with NFC technology and place them onto custom-built players to activate digital storytelling content.

By rotating the record, visitors unlocked short narratives explaining the brief, creative solution, and outcomes behind each project. The interaction showed how digital tools can support retail discovery through simple physical gestures, allowing technology to enhance the experience while remaining integrated into the environment.

The installation was conceived and produced entirely in-house by The One Off’s interdisciplinary teams across interiors, graphics, motion design, UX/UI, and development, reflecting the agency’s integrated approach to retail design and experience.

Throughout the week, the stand served as a meeting point for brands, retailers, and partners across the industry, prompting conversations about the evolving role of physical retail and how designed environments can create memorable customer experiences. By translating the cultural language of the record store into a contemporary retail concept, the project explored how curated environments, interaction, and storytelling can shape new retail experiences.
