Stepping Stone
A Place Like Home
City Relief’s main objective is to help the unhoused, who are exposed to serious hardships without the comfort of a place of their own. Group accommodations like shelters often produce fear. The concept is to create a trustworthy, safe, and approachable space.
The design is oriented to putting the unhoused at ease. It utilizes a modular system with warm textures and materials that has the flexibility to operate in diverse locations. This sense of a safe home environment would draw them to City Relief’s volunteers who could give them the help they need to integrate back into society. Thus remembering City Relief as the stepping stone to getting their life back on track.
Stackable Design
The system has the appearance of an accordion that can compress into a specially designed bus and expand into multiple configurations. The tables and chairs store flat while the tent enclosures are stacked vertically in the back. The bus has a roof-mounted cargo carrier and extra storage underneath the bus for smaller objects. The tents can be connected to make larger spaces for groups of people and separated to make private areas. The group seating is a similar accordion style, storing small and able to expand to accommodate more people. Wayfinding elements using brand colors are used throughout the space. The structures use a curtain-style design to provide privacy without the feeling of being trapped.
