Arms Reach Student Centre: Post Pandemic Wellness
In 2020 the covid-19 pandemic forced everyone into isolation and disrupted normalcy in everyday life. Three years later, the world is still trying to adapt to a new normal. The Arms Reach Student Centre project is a facility that supports post-secondary students’ mental health through post-isolation transition, by targeting physical and mental well-being as priorities. This Center will equip participants with foundational wellness techniques that promote long-term resilience, as well as a strong connection to the surrounding community through interactions and the built environment. The facility encourages collaboration and inclusivity amongst students to promote community connection through the use of flexible gathering and learning spaces. Movement will be incorporated into the space using biomorphic patterns and forms to encourage flow and avoid rigidity. Creating clear visual boundaries between quiet and loud zones will emphasize the contrasting spaces, which promotes the power of choice to enforce overall peace to cover a wide range of wellness needs. The project programming offered in the facility is inspired to create long-term wellness skills that will help individuals cope with their stressful lives after leaving post-secondary. The programming includes cooking classes, meditation studios, group fitness areas, art therapy, instructional classes, and lounges with built-in quiet areas.
