There was no snow in Milan that Christmas.
At dusk, Via Monte Napoleone felt unusually still. The visitors had gone, footsteps echoed through the cold, and amber lights escaped from CHANEL’s Palazzo, drawing me closer.
One window burned more brightly than the rest.
Gold wrapped a constellation of colourful objects as light folded behind the glass. It recalled Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss: intimacy and warmth held inside gold.
Closer still, an illuminated CHANEL universe revealed itself.
Baroque pearls formed chains of stars, diamond earrings became asteroids, and camellias traced the paths of shooting stars beside the double C. An evening bag flew beneath a satellite’s spiral wings, while a golden ballet-slipper spacecraft docked beside a silver handbag station.
Coco, dressed in a red spacesuit, prepared to explore her own galaxy.
Perhaps these dreams began with the golden headboard at La Pausa, reflecting the Mediterranean night sky. They continue in the universe Matthieu Blazy has imagined for CHANEL.
In his October show, light was no longer decoration. It became time itself. The universe was more than spectacle: a structure in which order and freedom could coexist.
The universe is vast. The individual appears small.
Yet the figures in the windows offer another answer.
They need not be monumental to remain distinct. They belong to CHANEL, and to themselves.
Like stars across a winter sky, every CHANEL girl is different.
Together, they become light.
Starlight falls over Milan.
