China has long been known for craft traditions and handmade production. In the hanger industry, however, products made in China are often associated with low-cost items produced for supermarket use.
Dadi, a hanger manufacturer founded in 1998, set out to challenge that perception by developing a higher-end production line.
In addition to investing in automated production equipment to improve consistency and functionality, the company selected 20 experienced workers from a workforce of about 200 employees to focus on the development of a premium hanger line. According to the company, several aspects of production were reconsidered during this process, including raw material selection, sanding techniques, and paint finishing methods.
Over the course of roughly three years, these changes led to a new line of hangers produced with greater attention to material and finishing quality.
During a visit to the factory, a customer from Japan compared the hangers with products manufactured in Japan, noting similarities in quality. Hangers sold in the Japanese domestic gift market can often reach significantly higher price levels.
At trade shows, visitors sometimes ask whether the hangers are manufactured in China. When the answer is yes, the reaction is often one of surprise — something the Dadi team says reflects how perceptions of manufacturing origin are beginning to shift.
