Bangkok: Future LAB Vol. 2 – Surf Culture

Continuing its focus on fashion and lifestyle trends for young urbanites, hybrid retail concept Siam Discovery knows how to entice this savvy demographic, and as of late, it has unveiled the latest edition of its popular Future LAB series at its Downtown Bangkok premises. The event, called Future LAB Vol. 2 – Surf Culture, once again focuses on skate culture, and specifically surfskating, by way of an in-depth exhibition, a nifty hyper-personalisation lab empowered by Australian surfing sportswear giant Rip Curl, and last but not least, the Thai capital’s very first surfskate school. The Find Your First Skateboard exhibition sees a wide range of surfboards, presented in three categories: skateboards (surfskate, old skool, longboard, downhill and cruiser among others), wakeboards (wakeboard, wakeskate and skimboard), and snowboards (snow and ski), all accompanied by detailed descriptions and history, but also short videos explaining the identities and personalities of each board. The aforementioned Hyper-personalisation Lab Empowered by Rip Curl is the place where to have your trophy board of choice fully customised and matched with your new attire. Mind you, that can also be personalised on the spot!

As the name already implies, the lab is powered by Rip Curl, offering not only a myriad of ways to customise your board, but also personalise your surf outfit and accessories through pressing and flex techniques using names, chosen words or messages, and matching these with different colours. Embroidery is available for every item with an exception of wet suits, and there are house artists to deliver hand-painting services. Mind you, the boards section also offers pre-order customisation services, as well as board hand-painting. Skate aficionados can build their own boards with professional assistance alongside waterborne adapter engraving service. The section offers skate track customisation where you can actualise your dream skate tracks and ramps. So, what’s on the shelves? A rather elaborate selection if merchandise of top brands, including YOW, SmoothStar, Sunova , Z-Flex , Penny and 9INE 5IVE (on through May 31). And that’s not all! As part of the Future LAB Vol. 2 – Surf Culture edition, Discovery Plaza has been transformed into the city’s first surfskate academy, offering up time slots (15 students per one hour for social distancing and safety reasons) and lessons from certified professional surfskaters such as Chatchai Somporn, Pro Surfer and Surfskate (on through May 2).
